Stadium FAQ

All about the suites at Ford Field

The NFL team Detroit Lions played inside the Pontiac Silverdome from 1975 until 2001, however, Pontiac is a suburb of Detroit and is located in an entirely different neighboring county of Oakland. During the late '90s as Detroit was on the brink of the automotive crisis and the city was rundown, a plan was hatched that would bring all the major sports teams back into the heart of Downtown Detroit to help kickstart the revitalization of the city.

Knowing that the Lions needed a new field, the idea of placing a domed field in Detroit was voted on, and plans for Ford Field were drawn up to be placed around an old department store warehouse that was built in the 1920s. Because of the fact that the plans are built around the old Hudson’s warehouse, the suites are unique and special to Ford Field, and the majority are located in the warehouse section along the field’s southern sideline.

Immense care and thought were put into the planning and construction of Ford Field, such as the fact that these arenas didn’t want to be an impending presence on the Detroit skyline, so both Ford Field and Comerica Park were built about 45 feet beneath the street level so it wouldn’t loom over the surrounding historical sites that are so near and dear to devout Michiganders.

Ford Field opened in 2002, and the Lions have played their home games at Ford Field since then. It also hosted the 2006 Super Bowl XL, and the city of Detroit banned together to put their best foot forward to showcase the beauty of the city while the spotlight was shining proudly on Motor City. Naming rights were purchased by the Ford Motor Company for the span of 20+ years, and a Ford family member has held controlling rights to both Ford Field, as well as the Detroit Lions dating back to 1963.
